“Walk” in 1 Corinthians

In Eph 4:1 Paul urges us to walk worthily of our calling.

The metaphor “walk” for lifestyle or behavior is used repeatedly throughout the NT. I am looking at each passage that uses this metaphor. Today is 1 Corinthians.

1 Corinthians

3:3 for you are still influenced by the flesh.  For since there is still jealousy and dissension among you, are you not influenced by the flesh and behaving like unregenerate people?

  • They are walking in the flesh, not in the Spirit
  • Flesh, jealousy, divisions (context later gives “building” metaphor for Church) note: this passage is discussing how we treat each other, internally in the Church
  • Also in context is partisanship. I believe that some people think they are being faithful to God and truth when they attack other believers, yet are perhaps falling into this trap of partisanship.

7:17 Nevertheless,  as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each person, so must he live. I give this sort of direction in all the churches.

  • Live where the Lord has assigned you (like “bloom where you are planted”)
  • Walk, live, where  God has you

Things our walk should involve:

  • “meat” not just “milk”
  • planting
  • building
  • A contentment and purpose where we are. The context of ch 7 is marriage vs. singleness.

Things our walk should not involve:

  • “jealousy and dissension” = ζῆλος (zelos) and ἔρις (eris)
    • ζῆλος in Greek mythology, Zelus is a winged enforcer who is at the throne of Zeus. Can be a good fervor or zeal, but also jealousy or malice.
    • ἔρις  (eris)
      • means strife, quarrel, contention. Think actual battle, battles of words, wrestling, rivalries. Can be political or domestic.
      • Eris was the Greek goddess of strife; her opposite was the goddess Harmonia
      • There is a good strife, as when you don’t like the conditions of things and are provoked to make them better
      • The bad strife is like the Apple of Discord – legend of how the Trojan wars were initiated
      • I love this Apple of Discord link – If Eris tosses this shiny apple into a group, friendships will end and war will break out because each person wants it. There is now something they value more than the other people. (Reminds somewhat of “The Gods Must be Crazy”)
      • wiki link for Eris: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eris_(mythology)
    • How do these two, Zelus and Eris, show up at church?

Metaphors in context: as mentioned above, meat vs. milk, planting and watering, building

Other items of interest in context: I think being content and trusting God’s purpose for us a part of the issue of our walk in chapter 7. Some who are married resent things about their life that are frustrating; Some who are single think that being married would solve their problems.

I need to keep an eye out for ζῆλος and ἔρις  – see if these terms keep coming back around.
