Similes Done Well

What is a favorite simile for you? I read this the other day:

It was a day of glassy calm in the Strait of Gibraltar. The sea was like a silver shield, the sky like a bowl of sapphire, with the mountains of Africa on the one hand, the mountains of Spain on the other as dark serrations on the horizon.

-Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, by C.S. Forester

Similes are so easy to ruin. But nicely done, they are art. And Forester is an artist, in my opinion. I usually prefer metaphors, I think in part because of ugly similes I’ve met in the past.

I welcome any and all passersby to enter one or more examples of similes well done.

Thank you!

He was all over it like flies on poop.

BTW – If this offends anyone, my apologies.

It is descriptive and communicates. It is nice to know one’s simile is in no danger of being accused of kitsch!
