The Andromeda Strain

Just read the Adromeda Strain by Crichton. I think some of his books explore a particular moral. The moral of this one might be, “Scientists are blind.” The best minds may gather in isolation at the most advanced facility and devote themselves entirely to understanding a new problem. But even then, they will miss important clues as they chase down theories that become pet theories.

The story is old in technological terms, but I think it has aged quite gracefully. It was engrossing and thought-provoking, even if the ending seemed a little weak.
